Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
